Julius Pittman & the Revival is the hip old school style rock band with a full helping of soul flavor from the Memphis Stax/Volt era. Formed in 2009, the band consists of Julius Pittman (founder, keyboard, and vocals), Randy Moss (guitar), Velpo Robertson (guitar), Audie Stanley (bass), Chris McIntyre (drums), John Stanley (tenor sax), Howard Smith (tenor/baritone sax) and Dave Triplett (trumpet). In 2010, they released their debut album Bucket List. Live Tonite! is their sophomore release, due out in October 2011. “A Good Fool is Hard to Find” is a foray into an upbeat blues number that swings out wide and high. With horns, guitar, drums and lyrics that capture the full essence of the blues, this track is my favorite one on the album. The lyrics tell the tale of a man coming home and finding his woman getting ready to leave him. “Baby if you leave me, it would hurt me to my soul. I don’t know why baby you have to be so cold. A good fool, a good fool is hard to find. Take a listen from me baby, a good fool is hard to find.” “Miss Lovin’ Her” is a love song with a more subdued blend of southern rock with a touch of blues thrown in. Pittman’s vocals are stirring as he remembers a love he once had. The more he thinks of her, the more he wants her back. Buying her flowers and sparing no expense, he goes to her, but is devastated to see her through the window having dinner with someone else. The melancholy guitar playing creates a layered background that builds up the song and sets the tone for a lament of love gone wrong and the regret of not knowing what you’ve got until it is no longer there. “Love Changes Like the Weather” is originally from the band’s 2010 release of The Bucket List. This song is an upbeat funky blend of rock and blues. Pittman stirs up a whirlwind of energy with lyrics that celebrate a love that keeps changing like the weather. He sometimes feels exasperated, but loves her all the same. The “Soul Enforcement” horn section is strongly represented in this track. Julius Pittman & the Revival constantly push the limits of what they can accomplish with their music. Striving to keep their sound fresh, full of funky soulful blues and spiced with old school rock, you never hear the same sound twice. Some tracks are more infused with the horn section, some with a strong blues draw and others have a more rock almost country twang. Live Tonite! is full of surprises and if you are a fan of the Stax/Volt era, you will enjoy this album.
