Wilson is a multi-instrumentalist, composer and lifelong musician
residing in Milwaukee, WI. A descendent of a long line of roots musicians,
Wilson got his start at age 5 learning the fundamentals of drumming from his
father – an accomplished Chicago Blues musician in his own right. Matthew’s
discovery of the bass at age ten and the guitar at age eleven were all it
took to break the levee. Since then, his life has been a varied love affair
with a wide range of music, using guitar as the primary tool of exploration.
His musical journey has since granted him the opportunity to tour extensively throughout North America, Europe & Asia and to play with and learn from some of the absolute pillars of American Rhythm & Blues music – namely legendary guitarist and member of Howlin’ Wolf’s band Hubert Sumlin, the “Original Funky Drummer” Clyde Stubblefield, Taj Mahal, Charlie Musselwhite and dozens of other Grammy Award nominated artists.
Wilson’s main focus in recent years has been an attempt to isolate the primary colors of music and to sculpt from those that which is most exciting and entrancing to the human soul. Following from the idea that all music is a progression of what has preceded it, we can look into the history of early recorded music and hear sounds that were not effected by anything else other than what the performers had heard in their immediate environment. After a survey of early recorded music from all areas, but particularly those emanating from the Great Rift Valley in East Africa, Wilson’s current projects are focused on bringing some of the essence which he has gleaned from that study.
